PETER HIMLER NAMED EDELMAN’S CHIEF MEDIA OFFICER
Industry Veteran to Lead Media Relations at World’s Largest Independent PR Agency
August 31, 2004, New York -- Edelman, the world’s largest independent public relations firm, today named Peter Himler as Executive Vice President and Chief Media Officer, a new position. Himler, a highly regarded industry veteran, leaves Burson-Marsteller after 11 years where he held the position of Managing Director heading the “Strategic & Corporate Media” team within the firm’s U.S. Corporate/ Financial Practice. He also served as Burson Marsteller’s global spokesperson.
“Today media relations is more valued than ever before; it is critical to establishing corporate and brand credibility and trust,” noted Richard Edelman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Edelman. “We are therefore delighted that someone with Peter’s knowledge and expertise in media strategy and media relations will be coming aboard to make us even stronger in this core function.”
Pam Talbot, U.S. president and COO of Edelman added, “Media relations is evolving, driven in part by the proliferation of channels, the explosion of micro-media such as blogs, and the convergence of news and entertainment, and Peter is ideally suited to help ensure we remain at the forefront of the industry. He has been an established force dealing with the news media for as along as I have known him.”
In his new position, Himler assumes the responsibility of the 20-member plus national media relations team, as well as developing media strategies and capability throughout the entire firm. “If you do this for a while, you know what works and what doesn’t; which technologies are here to stay, and which are not,” commented Himler. “Edelman has a wealth of talent. I look forward to working with many of them to accelerate innovation agency-wide in this often industry-defining function.” He will begin in Edelman’s New York office on September 13 reporting to Pam Talbot.
As a managing director and one of Burson-Marsteller’s senior media relations executives, Himler recently completed an eight-year assignment heading the PR campaign to build the National World War II Memorial in Washington. It was formally dedicated in ceremonies featuring President Bush, Senator Dole, Tom Hanks, Tom Brokaw and others over Memorial Day weekend 2004. He joined Burson-Marsteller in 1993 after serving for six years as Senior VP, Media Director of sister agency Cohn & Wolfe. He previously spent five years at Hill and Knowlton where, as the firm’s youngest vice president, he led the firm’s broadcast and consumer media relations function. He began his career with three years at the New York City entertainment PR firm of Robert Zarem Inc.
Himler is president of The Publicity Club of New York (www.publicityclub.org), is active with the Center for Communication (www.cencom.org), and sits on the Executive Advisory Board for the Communications and Media Studies Program at Tufts University from which he holds a B.A. degree in Political Science and French.
