Edelman Moves New York Office to Hudson Square
Firm’s new global co-headquarters fosters collaboration, showcases NYC emerging artists
August 31, 2009, New York -- Edelman, the world’s leading independent public relations firm, moved its New York office, also the firm’s global co-headquarters, into a new space in Hudson Square, located in Lower Manhattan today. Edelman transferred 500 professionals to the new space from both the Times Square location it occupied for more than 20 years and an additional office site located on Park Avenue South.
The new location now houses all of the firm’s New York personnel: Consumer Marketing; Corporate & Public Affairs; Health; and Digital, along with specialty operating units BioScience Communications (medical education and publishing); MATTER (sports and entertainment marketing); StrategyOne (research) and US Creative (editorial, design, production, and brand experience).
“Over the past decade, Edelman’s New York operation has grown significantly. The time had come for new space that reflected the full-service communications consultancy we are today,” said Matthew Harrington, U.S. President & CEO. “We look forward to the benefits of having all of our New York–based teams and specialties located in one building so we can more seamlessly integrate our offerings to create powerful solutions for our clients.”
Edelman’s new office is located in a former printing house in Hudson Square, which was previously the center of New York’s printing industry. 250 Hudson Street has expansive floor space, high ceilings, wrap-around views and unobstructed light. Today, Hudson Square is home to a growing number of media companies including Newsweek, WNYC, CBS Radio, New York and Viacom.
The open newsroom-style floor plan, designed in partnership with the architecture firm Gensler, places a priority on collaborative work areas. In fact, there are no offices. The space features multiple conference areas and other collaborative and social meeting spaces, which support a range of purposes: from internal team meetings to client meetings to brainstorming to “war rooms.” The office also has numerous private areas to provide staff members with a place to go for more focused, solitary work.
New York office president, Russell Dubner, notes, “This move is not just about a new location. It’s about a space that provokes thinking and dialogue and ultimately enables better work. Our people are what defines Edelman and keeping them inspired, challenged and engaged is key to our continued success.”
Towards that end, Edelman adopted an overarching curatorial concept around communications networks – exploring the influential relationship between individuals, culture, and communications systems. This concept informed the selection and commission of artwork in the office, which includes work by well-known artists like Paula Scher, Kehinde Wiley and Luis Jimenez. The office will also serve as a showcase for work by New York-based emerging artists working in a variety of media. One of the first installations is by Geraldine Lau and features a “mash-up” of the public transportation systems of U.S. cities in which Edelman has offices.
The new office also reflects the firm’s commitment to the environment, with several green initiatives including furniture and materials selected for their functionality and minimal environmental impact.
Edelman’s New York office is now located at 250 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10013. Telephone numbers remain the same. The fax is now 212-704-0117.
