CORE NEWS FACTS

Edelman Change and Employee Engagement Group’s third annual “New Frontiers in Employee Communications” study surveyed senior corporate communicators at 75 Fortune 500 companies and dozens of global organizations about the use and effectiveness of internal communications channels.
According to the results, 32 percent of organizations author, support or host a blog, 35 percent use podcasts and 11 percent operate a wiki.
For the third year in a row in-person communications is listed as the most effective method to reach employees and e-mail is cited as the most frequently used channel.
Less than one-fifth (19 percent) of organizations direct blogs solely at external stakeholders.
Only 13 percent of respondents said their company monitors blog activity by employees and nearly two-thirds of corporate communicators are not sure if their organizations monitor employee blog use.
Less than half of respondents know what a wiki is (48 percent) and only 29 percent of participants say they read a blog regularly – a number that remains unchanged from last year.
Among the most frequently listed obstacles to implementation of new media channels are lack of resources, resistance to change and a desire to control communications.
Organizations that have a blog  (internal or external) are more likely to have a policy regarding employee blogging, less likely to have a policy which prohibits employees from posting on external chat rooms and message boards, less likely to prohibit the use of instant messaging and less likely to block access to the Internet than companies that do not have a blog.

Companies that find strategic ways to use a variety of communications tools will be able to better attract and retain talented workers.”
Quotes Attributable to Gary Grates, president, Employee Engagement
“Internal communications strategy needs to be aligned with and drive the business strategy of an organization. Technology should not dictate communications goals; communications goals should dictate the technology used.”
Quotes Attributable to Michael Wiley, svp, me2revolution

“Blogs can help bring humanity back into the workplace. We have become so concerned with communicating numbers and processes that employees have forgotten how to build relationships. How can companies ask employees to provide superior service and innovative thinking when everything they see and hear flies in the face of that? Blogs help create a culture that supports those behaviors.”

Quotes Attributable to David Carter, chief technology officer, iUpload
“It’s easier to sell an executive on internal blogging. All they need to do is audit their Sent Mail folder for one-to-many communications that probably should have been a post in their internal blog.”
