In August 2012, the Philippines experienced some of the worst monsoonal rains in history. In just one week, over two million people across 30 cities were affected, and more than 119,000 families were transferred to evacuation centers. Fortunately, no colleagues from our affiliate EON Inc were injured; however several lost their homes in the disaster so we knew we had to do something to help.
As part of the Edelman’s 603 “Summer of Service” initiative, we decided to try and raise 60,000 PhP to support 60 families for 60 days.
In late August, over 50 Edelman Singapore staff attended a “Meals-for-Meals” fundraiser. In exchange for a 10SGD donation, staff were treated to a scrumptious array of traditional Filipino dishes served with unique Filipino beats playing in the background. Teams in the office also went head-to-head in a Price is Right-inspired quiz to guess just how far their 10SGD donation would go. The lunch also served as an opportunity to launch a collection drive for previously loved items and non-perishable food items to donate to the people in the Philippines affected by the disaster.
The lunch raised 1,032SGD, which was generously matched by the our local office for a total of 2,064SGD, or 70,070 PhP – well exceeding our 60,000 PhP goal. Funds raised were donated to the Philippine Red Cross, while two very full boxes of clothes, bed linens and non-perishable food items were shipped to the Philippines with the help of OFW PinoyStar Magazine, a community magazine for Filipino expats in Singapore.
Special thanks to Kate Mclennan and our ex-intern Valerie Chan for driving the effort.
