Excellent points, all. The fact is, though, that the media continues to be largely controlled by white males who don't "get it" yet that people are defined in many ways, not just in how they look. As a deep fried Southerner, I can assure you that the stereotyping goes way beyond looks. How often do people with Southern accents get portrayed as anything but ignorant? For some reason, Hollywood thinks it's still OK to make fun of people with Southern accents, as if political correctness needn't be considered for this particular group.

Ironically, these same Hollywood types for some reason think that as long as an actor "looks Hispanic" s/he has the whole PC angle covered on that front. Sad, isn't it?

BTW, one of my all-time favorite comedians is Henry Cho, in part because he's an Asian who speaks with a Southern accent and does an entire routine on how that really messes with people's heads.

An interesting perspective on a controversial topic.

Personally, I'm more comfortable with "Black", partially because I've been "Black" longer than I've been African American.

I've never felt that the term encompassed the true diversity of the Black race. As you so succinctly stated, it is not a label that can be applied to every individual in our community for various reasons--dual ethnicity among them. It also begs to ask the question: "Are whites that are of African descent, but American citizens--also African American? Something that makes you go hummmm?

The topic of black identification is always one of great debate. If anything, I just wish we'd get more upset and adamant at the adoption and constant use of the word 'nigga' towards one another. I do not absolve myself in that regard. Since I consider myself a work in progress for as long as I'm on God's ever changing green earth, I expect that my ideals and philosophies will also follow suit.

I often wonder why it seems, in my humble opinion, that black americans are the only people that take issue with identifying with their orginal homeland. Sure, many of us have never been to Africa. To that note, many of us have no interest either. However, I've met plenty of people with Mexican, Polish, Italian, Irish, etc decent who can't speak of lick of Spanish or other native tongue, and many have never visited those places either. Yet, they will not hestitate to embrace their ancestral lineage. Why is that? Is it because their people will brag, boast and teach about the richness of their culture of orgin? I don't know. Have the backwards and 'uncivilized' images of Africa been so deeply implanted in the subconscious of the black american, that we get offended at even the thought of it? I don't know.

But when it comes to how I identify, I say African-American. Unfortunately, I cannot pinpoint my beginnings to a specific country or particular tribe. But what I do know is, my bloodline began some where in the stream of Africa's soil and rivers.

I use African as my way of identifying with my place of orgin. It is my own personal way of paying homage and respect. I am American because it's my place of birth.

Like any language, over time, words, terms and monikers evolve. In my parents' lifetime, they were "colored," then "negro." In my lifetime, I have been both "Black" and "African American." As for my monikers, I have no problem with either term, nor a particular preference for one.

But why run from the term African American? I am proud of my tone (black); I am proud to have roots in Africa; and America is just as much my country as it is anyone else's...

Growing up, my parents and grandparents were very active members in the Civil Rights Movement and Black Muslim Movement in Chicago. My Great-grandfather was permanently paralyzed on his left side after being beaten in Mississippi by Klan during the rash of church burnings pre-empted by the Voter Registration Act. And my great great-grandfather worked his entire adult life helping to build/lay many of the streets and railroads we use today. My ancestors helped build this country, sacrificed and fought for many of the freedoms that Americans-- immigrant or not-- enjoy today.

This country is not a superpower by accident. It is strong today because of 400 years of free labor (imagine if you could run a company on even 1 year of free labor, how far you'd be). It is strong because of the sweat, tears, sacrifices and cultural and intellectual contributions made by the people of African descent.

America is far from perfect, and we may not always agree with or care for our leaders (i.e., Bush). But I do not turn my nose up at the ammenities and freedoms afforded to me today. I embrace them, because they were hard-earned.

Whether you are from Jamaica or Barbados or Haiti or Mississippi, if you are "black," you are of the African diaspora. And if you are living and working in America as a citizen, while enjoying the freedoms imbued to you via its centuries-long history of struggle, then you are American.

I am Black, and I am African American. To deny either term would be an insult to my ancestors, both across the Atlantic Ocean and on these very shores.

To me, "Black" is the most encompassing of what it means to be a child of Africa- regardless of where we may be in the world, what language we speak, or our national morays. Whether you were born in the Caribbean, South America, North America, Africa, Europe, or Asia, most of us can "feel" Africa when we see, hear, or taste it. It is what connects Soul food to Jamaican food; African Drumming to Dilla’s MPC skills; Nigeria’s bubas to the new generation’s 26XL tee-shirts (amongst many other things).

"African American" is a decent descriptor for Black people in America who cannot trace their lineage beyond the state from which their family was enslaved (like so many of us). But I think it is problematic when you have Black people in America from various other countries that are nationalistic enough to not want their particular cultural heritage absorbed by "African American."

"Afro-Brazilian American" and "Afro-Cuban American" is just a lot to say (although I’m sure some people have no problem with it). That’s why, in my opinion, describing one’s self as "Black" is much more apropos. It's simple, yet rich and complex...

I have been tempted to add something more...

So often, we, as "people of the African diaspora living in America" run from the title, "American" because of its shameful history as racist bullies. I know that for a long while, I too adopted and held onto the opinion that I was ashamed to be given a hyphenated title (African-American) for a country that snatched my ancestors involuntarily, enslaved us, freed us, and yet still, has never quite made us feel "at home."

But my opinion began to slowly change about 9 years ago, when I first moved to New York, during an incident in which my roots and identity were called into question:

One of my very first friends in New York was a Trinidadian woman I met on the job, named Mary. For me, as a native of Chicago-- where the West Indian community is significantly smaller, almost non-existent-- meeting a Trinidadian and getting to know her family and culture was so enriching to my mind, spirt and stomach! I looooved it!

That following year, she threw me a going-away party (I was leaving my job). All of the "People of Color" that worked on the job, came out to bid me goodbye. Half-way through our drunken revelries, the subject of "African-Americans" came up. It actually started with my friend, Mary. She said that, unlike most West Indians who immigrate here and work 2, 3 jobs, African-Americans are not motivated. We are lazy, looking for hand-outs, have no sense of family, are un-hygienic and would rather collect welfare than get a job.

I was shocked to be having such a hateful discussion-- blacks among blacks-- on a topic normally reserved for "non-blacks." I looked around the room and realized, when I saw everyone nodding their heads in agreement, that I was the only "African-American" in the entire room. They were ALL West Indian (except one guy from Liberia). Every time I tried to interject with a "but..." another person threw in another insult of how wasteful and worthless we African-Americans behave.

I must have looked CRAZY when I stood up at the restaurant table in front of everyone (and a whole bunch of white patrons as well) so hurt, in tears, voice shaking, and I had this to say (not nearly as slick or composed, however):

African Americans have a very, very long, documented, tortured history of dissention, fighting, struggle and survival in this country. It is off of our backs this country was built. The rapes, the separations of husbands and wives, the hangings, the burnings, the beatings, the water hosing, the marches, the protests, the boycotts... The African-American struggle brokered the freedoms that opened the doors and changed the laws that made it easier for Asians, For East Indians, for Latinos, and yes, for West Indians to live here and breath easier today!

African-Americans did not come to America voluntarily. But all the People of Color to follow... they did. And they are now able to enjoy the freedoms of this country because of the black people here who paved the way (listen to Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit").

I no longer take the sacrifices of my ancestors for granted. My father was incarcerated from the time I was 3 yrs old, until I was 17 because of his participation in a demonstration in Baton Rouge, LA, with the Black Muslims. He and 11 other brothers were trying to organize and educate the black people of what was then considered the most racist town in America. A huge riot broke out, and off to Angola Prison he went.

I think about my great great-grandfather, my great grandfather, my grandfather and my then how own father traded in his freedom fighting for ours, and I am reminded of all the people who sacrificed to pave the way.

BLACK PEOPLE IN AMERICA!!! Wake up! If you're from another country, sure, have pride in your roots and heritage, as I do mine. But why separate and define yourselves amongst one another through tenuous titles when most other non-black people could really give a damn? We're ALL black to them at the end of the day.

I say, if you're a black person living, breathing, working in America and benefitting from the freedoms of its tortuous history, you are African American.

After all, where are you right now? For those whose progenitors immigrated here, why did your parents or grandparents leave their home country? For those African Americans whose ancestors were brought here involuntarily, no one is holding a gun to your heads to make you stay. Where are you right now?

The struggle continues, and now, it is our struggle. But where are we right now?

Your perspective is an interesting one and based on the responses the topic is certainly thought of, if not spoken about, often. I personally refer to myself as Black. With the possible exception of colored or person of color, it is the only label inclusive enough to encompass an entire race of people independent of nationality or ethnicity. Terms such as African-American, by standard definitions are in fact more nationalities than races. When addressing matters of race I try to make it a point of not using "African-American," unless I happen to be in a setting that reeks of political correctness.

As a person of Trinidadian and American descent your nationality is obviously mixed, however both of your parents share some African descent which speaks to their nationalities, and to a broader extent, ethnicity. As both are closely to culture and heritage I don't necessarily view them as divisive labels and to ignore them ignores the unique experiences that each group has to offer. Not to mention that feeling of pride that you get when you encounter people of the same or similar backgrounds. Imagine
The West Indian Day Parade with no one reppin' their island, or even a New York where people didn't rep their borough.
However as minority groups began to develop formidable voting blocks based on race the need arose for more divisive labels. So where race had pretty much been broken down to Black, White and Other (Brown)someone decided to substitute nationality for race. Black Americans became African-Americans which further separated them from other Blacks living in this country.

When used as a substitute for race African-American refers to a specific group of people and their desire to be recognized, by the larger society, but primarily by their own nation. This is a result of our own unique experiences as Black people in this country. As you are a Black woman in America, you would likely identify with this group regardless of your heritage or nationality. Just as English born Jamaican might have certain unique experiences that distinguish him or her from someone born on the island itself. Those unique experiences make us different and to a large extent define who we are as groups of people. But they unite us as well. The names may change but name is nothing without a definition and that is, or should always be determined by us.

I don't mind being labeled Black because it speaks to an experience that I share with every other Black person regardless of nationality or ethnicity. I don't mind being referred to as a person of color because that speaks to experiences I share with every other Black or brown skinned person on this planet. These things are clearly defined.

The problem I have with the term African-American, isn't the term itself but rather its lack of a clear definition. As much as it will pain some to hear this, we as Black people in this country have demonstrated more freedom and self-determination through the use of the term "nigga" than we have by using African-American. Love it or hate it, we all know that when Blacks refer to each other by the N word it has a completely different meaning than if someone outside of our race made the same reference. We've not only re-defined it but we've changed the spelling, turned it into an acronym and probably lots of other things that I'm not even aware of. I'm not sure we can say the same for "African-American." I'm not even convinced that we chose it. But as someone earlier pointed out, by definition, we don't have exclusive rights to it because we didn't define it. If anything it defines us (as people of both African and American descent).

Do I think labels are limiting? Only if we let them. If the powers that be ever decide to start re-zoning races, ethnicities or nationalities like voting districts then I will have a problem but until then I'm ok with them. In the end we all expect to be judged on our individual identities, but those identities are shaped as much by our common experiences as they are by our unique ones and I think those commonalities should be recognized.

I've been reading the post here, and felt that I had to say my piece. After travelling in South America and coming to my own conclusions I have decided that no man can label me. When I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina people repeatedly tried to guess where I was from. Because of my facial features they thought I was from Brazil, because of my speech they thought I was from the Carribean, and because of my hair they thought I was from Africa. Most people were actually surprised when I told them that I was born in America to two "African-American" parents.
My point being that, no matter where we go in this world we will only be one thing, which is ourself. To define is to debase. The first thing the Europeans did when we were brought over to the Americas was to rename us. You may remember the "Toby" scene from Alex Haley's "Roots." That wasn't just part of the movie, that's how slaves were initially broken, by severing any ties that they may have had to their homeland.
To let anyone else define you, is to give them power over your being.
Think about how Columbus named the native people of North America as Indians. To this day, we still refer to these people based on a misnomer by a very confused and lost explorer.
The true history of us as "black" people has been horribly masked and distorted by our Europeans. If we still knew who we were today and throughout slavery here in the Americas, this enterprise would have never worked. You can't make a man submit to your will unless you strip him of his identity and tell him who he is.
