I wonder if you can really think about the glass ceiling for Asian Americans without also considering the lack of mobility in the U.S. generally. Today, if where you started is the most accurate indicator of where you will wind up, what does that mean for the Asian American workforce? Is there a meeting ground for tackling these issues both from the perspective of social and institutional culture AND from the perspective of larger economic trends?

I think you're right about the direction being set from the top, including the definition of what 'growth' means in any company. I could imagine that many managers in communications companies still evaluate non-white employees by what 'extra' they will bring (a language, insight into a particular audience, a constituency, a willingness to grow an international branch or office, a boost to their diversity numbers), rather than by what they bring simply as talented professionals working in media. Leadership is the only way out of that line of practice.

Thank you. I think that the mobility issue doesn't play as much a role, as you can find Asian Americans all up and down the socioeconomic ladder.

I don't disagree with the premise that mobiility has been sharply curtailed in recent times and that to be middle class (or more) it's best to start there.

However, the Asian Americans who I grew up with from poor families, now belong to the middle class.

What accounts for that? Why do Asian American kids from poor backgrounds and bad neighborhoods seem better able to escape them than kids of other races? Why do they make the "right" decisions?

Is there something about Asian American family life and culture that allows them to be somewhat protected from the deletrious aspects of poor neighborhoods and backgrounds?

My view is that there isn't as much middle class flight in Asian American society, so that even though the families that are better off still mix socially with other families, even if they are not related. This provides a wealth of role models and an impetus to stay in school and do well.

I admit this is only anecdotal but it does seem to me that there's a reason that 50% of Asian American adults have college degrees (vs. 27% for the general population over 25).
