Winding path to PR.
November 2, 2006

Posted by leah.jones

On the phone with a colleague today, I apologized for my writing style. “The problem is that I have a comedy background, so even official documents start sounding…” He cut me off, “What do you mean, a comedy background?” Yes, once upon a time, I was a stand-up comic.

Nothing about my career path before I came to Edelman suggested I would ever end up at a PR firm, but I’m here. I have my degree in Chemistry, a minor in Spanish. My resume includes study abroad administration, college housing, sexual assault awareness and prevention, a waitress, a cashier at a major retail chain, manager of an ice cream parlor. In my time off I’ve taken lessons to learn improv comedy, writing, tango, and African drumming.

Somehow, this combination was magic and I am now a part of the me2revolution. What has your path to PR looked like? What was unexpected that led to something wonderful? Tell me about your path to PR.

Finished my second year of junior college, was taking more jazz band classess than graduation requirements; liked social science, graphic arts and better-than-advertising job security, so I looked into PR. Looking back, a fascination with the media was with me at a young age when I called up our local FOX affiliate at the age of 10 and asked how they made any money if I wasn't paying them to watch cartoons. I'm actually majoring in PR, so hopefully I won't need to manage an ice cream parlor to get my foot in the door! ;) Nice post. I hope you still make time for improv.

Worked as a self-employed construction worker but got tired of the very cold British winter mornings.

Saw a prospectus for a university PR degree and thought it looked interesting. Haven't looked back since.

Stephen-my dad is a painter by trade and he helped steer my sister and I to college with summers spent sanding in the hot Indiana sun.

Eric-glad to see that you are starting with a PR degree. Make sure to take time to keep living after you start working!

Do I still do improv? No, right now I'm studying hebrew.

PR seemed like the best strategy for online marketing. I came to PR from marketing-sales-internet marketing-seo and now corporate blogging.
