2007 Skiing Without a Sloping Checking Account
These days, when it comes to winter mountain travel, it seems consumers need more tips on how to make their money go farther rather than how to make it down the slopes. At a time when consumers are recovering from over-spending on presents and partying, skiing and snowboarding trips take their toll on post-holiday budgets. But, with a little research on the best times and deals for mountain travel, they don’t always have to.
I've learned from previous ski trips to Jackson Hole, Big Sky and Colorado's many mountain resorts that the biggest money saver is booking winter airfare in, oh, July. But we don't always know our travel schedules that far in advance. This year I'm looking for additional ways to cut corners on the little things that seem to add up. Here are a few thought-starters I've picked up on when it comes to planning a coinage-conscious wintry escape.
1. Off-peak travel times: This isn't a Capitol One commercial -- you don't have to ski in April to get reasonable airfare. But you might want to consider flying at non-traditional times such as the usual Thursday night prior to three-day getaways. As eager as you may be to get first or fresh tracks on the hills, they will still be there (with a lot of snow in light of recent western dumps) at noon. Consider flying out the morning of your trip -- airfare is generally less expensive, you'll save money on skipping one night of accommodations, and most mountains offer half-day tickets.
2. Package deals: Many of these are offered during non-holiday weekends and can provide great skiing on less crowded mountains. Do the research necessary to find a package that makes sense for your scope of vacation.
3. Bundled tickets: How many full days will you actually ski? Lift tickets and ski/board rentals all depend on it, so make sure you'll use that in which you've invested.
4. Mid-week mountains: If you can swing it, shoot for a Sunday-Wednesday trip. Less skiers means more access to the lifts and runs you desire.
5. Snack packs: No one will raise an eyebrow if you don't have legs after a few runs and turn in for lunch. However, if you're still feeling good and want to make the most of your ski days, carry lunch in your pocket and on your back with a Clif bar and a Camelpak.
6. Apres free: We know, we know. Apres ski is part of the experience. So if you're going to imbibe, choose to do so where the brews are 2-for-1 or the extreme jalapeno poppers are 1/2-priced.

Unfortunately the problem we're seeing here in Montreal (& Quebec area in general) is a lack of snow whereas hills are operating at a very limited capacity. Some hills are even still closed this January! Booking too early during the era of post-Inconvenient Truth hype may result in far more time enjoying apres-ski at the bar than time on the slopes.
That was my experience anyway over the last week.
