« Being Home | Main | Leaving Home: When it's a choice, and when it's not »

Pack your laptop… and your sunscreen too!

Talking about business trips, yesterday I realized how most of us get to think “great! I’m going to Cancun for this or that meeting or convention”. It’s funny because when you travel for business you almost never get to visit any tourism locations even though you are ten minutes away!

However, business travelers are becoming more and more popular among tourism companies (hotels, airlines, etc.) because they have realized these travelers are a sometimes forgotten potential market. All that has to be done is adapt facilities and activities to their schedules and routines.

Therefore, some countries have developed master plans that contain complete tourism zones for business travelers. These zones may concentrate several services with walking distance between them, such as convention centers, business developments (for temporal offices, for example), shopping centers and technology advanced hotels and resorts (wireless Internet, ergonomic furniture, noise-proof walls and doors, etc.). This relatively new “sub-industry” offers the best services to business travelers so they can fulfill their responsibilities in the best way, but also gives them the opportunity to carry out and enjoy recreational activities such as 2-day quick trips to near cities, golf, spa, concerts, museum visits, etc.

The idea is to offer flexibility of schedules as well as variety of activities that can be squeezed between the business traveler meeting or training session. After all, if people are already at your destination, better take advantage of it. Here in Mexico, we believe that offering these tourism activities to business travelers is a way to give them a taste of what you have to offer in longer stays or for the whole family.
