Unexpected Finds in Italy

This summer our family took a long-awaited trip to Italy to visit family and introduce our boys, ages 8 and 11, to the joys of travel. I must confess that I was in a bit of panic about how the boys would handle the long flight, the time difference and the wear-and-tear of sight-seeing in the heat of summer. To my great surprise, things couldn’t have gone better. One of the highlights of the trip was an evening tour of Pompeii. This is a fairly new option at Pompeii and it’s a perfect way to see this famous historical site. On Sunday evenings from April through mid-November you can take a guided tour of the ruins which are illuminated by torch-light and narrated by two actors who portray what everyday life was like in the city. The tour runs about an hour and a half and you are given special access to portions of the site inaccessible during the day. Given how hot Pompeii can be during the day, this was an ideal way to beat the heat!

Another unexpected highlight was dinner at the newly renovated Hotel Capo La Gala. The resort is halfway between Pompeii and Sorrento and has a stellar view of Bay of Naples. The décor is particularly unique because the restaurant is built into the side of a cliff and the seating is in cave-like outcrops. Granted, this is bit more pricey than the typical pizza or pasta place in Italy, but our boys were so enthralled it was worth the extra euros!

Hotel Room Killer Views and Anti-Views

I just wanted to give a shout out to one of my favorite blogs, HotelChatter, and its regular series -- "Room with a Killer View" and the negative counterpart, "Room with an Anti-View."

Of course, the "Killer Views" accomplish exactly what they're supposed to -- I end yo lusting after the hotel and/or the destination and immediately want to plan a trip there. These are the views that you see on the hotel's website, in the travel magazines and in your photo albums of your fabulous friends who have the time and money to vacation liberally.

The "Anti-Views," though, just make me giggle. Examples like these:

(That hotel room window -- the only one in the room -- is actually completely frosted.)

So what's the best/worst view you've ever had in a hotel room?
