A Mayor Among Us

The City of Westminster elected a new Lord Mayor last night. Her name is Sarah Richardson. She is the youngest Lord Mayor ever. And she works for Edelman! I asked Susan whether she felt lucky or unlucky in light of what transpired. She contemplated her response for a bit, wanting to give a thoughtful answer: “Both,” she said. Edelman UAE celebrated International Women's Day with a Global Women’s Executive Network (GWEN) event for all the women in the office. We have female CEOs and presidents of countries, girls can go to school and women can vote and choose who and if they want to marry. That evolution is incomplete, however, until it is truly global. Despite the rather disconcerting notion that women only accounted for just 17 percent of the delegates at the World Economic Forum, those who did attend certainly made sure their voices were heard. I often hear both sexes perpetuate the stereotype that some women don’t help other women succeed in the workplace. I vehemently disagree. What has transpired since Susan’s accident has also been nothing short of extraordinary. I – and others – remembered the original (read pre-Internet) definition of the word “community.” I just finished watching all three presidential debates and witnessed, firsthand, a unique version of what I could think of no other name for but a ‘moderator Oreo’ – two vanilla outside shells (Jim Lehrer, Bob Schieffer) with a rich, colorful middle (Candy Crowley). Sometimes we need to take time to care for someone important in our lives, and Edelman's new U.S. Caregiver Policy helps realize that. “Life, like a stool, has three legs,” Dan Edelman always offered: “work, family and community.”A Mayor Among Us
