PR Students from American University, Auburn and U of Georgia Honored for Leadership

Edelman today named three recipients of its 2015 Daniel J. Edelman and Ruth Edelman Public Relations Student Society of America Awards. Each will receive $1,500 and a three-month paid internship at one of Edelman’s U.S. offices to help advance their public relations skills.

Receiving the Daniel J. Edelman/PRSSA award, named after the founder of Edelman, are:

  • Rachel Pipan of Auburn University, a senior majoring in public relations and minoring in business. She manages on-campus communications for the university’s Office of Undergraduate Research, and her career goal is to be the communications director for an international nonprofit organization.
  • Elizabeth “Annie” Swenson of the University of Georgia, a public relations major with a minor in fashion merchandising and a recipient of the Grady College of Journalism’s New Media certificate. She is vice president of the university’s PRSSA chapter and interns at Recipe for Press, DIY PR.

Receiving the Ruth Edelman/PRSSA award, named after the late deputy chairman of Edelman, is:

  • AnLi Kelly-Durham of American University, who is studying public communication and law and society, has interned three summers for a leading equestrian PR firm and is an active PRSSA member at the university.

The Daniel J. Edelman/PRSSA award has been presented annually since 1990 to active PRSSA students and honors those who have demonstrated exceptional leadership ability, a commitment to a public relations career and esteemed contributions to PRSSA.

“Being so familiar with Daniel Edelman’s career, it is an incredible feeling and honor to win the award named after him,” said Pipan. “I can’t wait to begin this next step in my career at Edelman.” Swenson said, “I couldn’t be more honored to accept this award, and I can’t wait to see what I contribute to Edelman and the opportunities I will get to take on.”

The Ruth Edelman/PRSSA award is presented in partnership with Edelman’s Global Women’s Executive Network (GWEN) to recognize students who demonstrate achievement in women’s leadership, women’s studies and/or contributions in the field to promote women’s issues.

“I am so thrilled and honored,” said Kelly-Durham. “To be considered a top-tier PRSSA student and acknowledged for my achievements related to women’s issues is a great feeling. I can’t wait to pursue these further.”

Students competing for the awards were judged on their leadership, public relations-related achievements and activities, social media/digital presence and recommendations from faculty members and/or industry professionals.
