Communications Students from The University of Texas at Austin and Duquesne University Honored for Leadership

Edelman today named recipients of its 2017 Daniel J. Edelman and Ruth Edelman Public Relations Student Society of America Awards. Each will receive $1,500 and a three-month paid internship at one of Edelman’s U.S. offices to help advance their communications and marketing skills.

Receiving the Daniel J. Edelman/PRSSA award, named after the late founder of Edelman, is:

  • Sarah Vasquez of The University of Texas at Austin, a senior majoring in public relations. She is vice president, professional development of the university’s PRSSA chapter and cofounder of We, Too, Are America.

Receiving the Ruth Edelman/PRSSA award, named after the late deputy chairman of Edelman, is:

  • Rachel Willis of Duquesne University, who is studying public relations and international relations, has interned in several social media and marketing roles and is an active PRSSA member at the university.

The Daniel J. Edelman/PRSSA award has been presented annually since 1990 to active PRSSA students and honors those who have demonstrated exceptional leadership ability, a commitment to a public relations career and esteemed contributions to PRSSA.

“Edelman was the first agency tour I ever went on upon joining PRSSA over 3 years ago,” said Vasquez. “Edelman has always exemplified the highest of standards in communications and continues to inspire me today!”

The Ruth Edelman/PRSSA award is presented in partnership with Edelman’s Global Women’s Executive Network (GWEN) to recognize students who demonstrate achievement in women’s leadership, women’s studies and/or contributions in the field to promote women’s issues.

“I am honored to receive this award and uphold the memory of Ruth Edelman, especially her hard work as an engaged citizen in her community and her unequivocal wit and grace as a savvy businesswoman,” said Willis. “Her commitment to social advocacy and women’s leadership continues to inspire me as a young professional pursuing a career in public relations. I’m excited for the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with the talented and creative team at Edelman this summer and embody Ruth’s legacy as a strong female leader.”

Students competing for the awards were judged on their leadership, public relations-related achievements, work samples, and social media/digital presence.
