In the 2015 Edelman Media Forecast: Storytelling in the Age of Social News Consumption, the Edelman Media Network took a deep dive into what ingredients made news stories social in 2014 across general news and five key industry sectors to better understand how our media strategies must adapt. In partnership with NewsWhip, a technology company that tracks how stories spread on social networks, we analyzed the top shared stories and which publishers are seeing their stories shared across the key social networks. Analysis of the NewsWhip data informed a survey of more than 250 journalists, fielded in partnership with Muck Rack, and revealed that:

  • More than 75 percent of journalists say they feel more pressure now to think about their story’s potential to get shared on social platforms
  • To make their stories more shareable they are infusing their stories with five key ingredients: video / images, brevity, localization, more use of human voice and a proximity to trending topics
